The Great Vigil marks the capstone of Lent and the Triduum–the end of the struggle between light and darkness. This is the most important liturgy of the whole year. No other event has more significance than this celebration, as it is much more than a remembrance of the Easter story. We welcome the peace that darkness brings while celebrating the light that shines through from our Paschal Candle. That light of Christ spread throughout the candles held by the assembly while the Exsultet is sung, an ancient, haunting, and beautiful prayer of thanksgiving for the newly welcomed light and the holiness of the night. We listen to the dawn of creation. These stories build to the proclamation of the Easter Gospel and the rebirth of the “Alleluia!” Finally, we renew our baptismal commitment and gather around the table to remind ourselves what it means to live as people of the Resurrection.
