Communication Studies

The Art and Science of Communications

Communication studies is a broad field that encompasses a variety of topics, such as interpersonal communication, group communication, organizational communication, and mass communication.

Prepare to be Discerning Collaborators and Evocative Communicators

Communication studies majors at St. °µÍø½ûÇø will gain theoretical and practical skills in written, oral, and visual communication to be prepared for a career in communications and leadership today.

With career readiness incorporated at every level, you will gain and practice these essential, high-value career skills.

This major is one of two communications majors in the country that requires students to take a leadership communication course. This unique course provides opportunities for extensive self-assessment and delves into issues such as ethics, leadership style, and personal strengths, all with a focus on women's leadership.

You will find your voice and use it confidently and articulately, as well as examine the impact of mass media on gender norms, legislative debates, and social movement strategies.

As a communication studies major, students are encouraged to complete internships - such as in the communications offices of major corporations and small businesses. Recent internship sites include Best Buy, BI Performance Services, Dynamark Corporation, Ecolab, Green Tree Financial, Medtronic, the Minnesota Department of Transportation, KMSP-TV, KDWB radio station, and the St. Paul Heritage and Festival Foundation.

Dual Degree Program

Applied Science in Communication Studies

St. Kate's offers the opportunity to apply a student's liberal arts education in the field of occupational therapy through unique 3+ dual degree programs in three dual degree options: Master of Arts in Occupational Therapy, Doctor of Occupational Therapy-Entry Level, or Master of Public Health. The dual degree program allows students to complete their bachelor's degree while pursuing a graduate degree.

As an applied science in communication studies major, students will complete the communication studies pre-occupational therapy sequence of courses and supporting work for the MAOT program.

As an applied science in communication studies major, students will complete the communication studies pre-occupational therapy sequence of courses and supporting work for the OTD EL program.

As an applied science in communication studies major, students will complete the communication studies pre-public health sequence of courses and supporting work for the MPH program.
